Imagination is Expressed in Digital Format
Creativity is a fundamental component in the genesis of new uses and applications. In Campus Party Europe we are going to explore the expressive possibilities of that creativity, attacking the process from all sides.
A video of more than one thousand stills per second, for example, will show us a different reality on which we don’t usually stop to think; the pixels of photography build a fascinating form of condensed vision in a time lapse; and the new possibilities of digital design move concepts to a tangible terrain.
Virtual has stopped being so to become, definitively, the other face of reality. Digital creators help us to understand the rapid changes that are produced in a highly technical world. The participants in Campus Party Europe will witness and play an important role in this revolution.
Coordinated by Diego Hurtado de Mendoza (Spain).

Creativity by Oliviero Toscani
Unfortunately, although we have tried everything in our power for Oliviero Toscani to be with us today, his conference has been permanently suspended. The flight that should have brought Toscani from Paris was suspended because of the problems being suffered by the air traffic in Europe due to the explosion of a volcano in Iceland. We are convinced that we can count on Oliviero Toscani to attend another edition of our event.
“Creativity is an added value to energy, intelligence and sensitivity. It is the possibility that exists between the rational and the emotional. Creativity requires an uncontrolled state, of limitless value, and that is why conformity is its worst enemy.” Oliviero Toscani studied photography in Zurich. He worked for Benetton between 1982 and 2000 contributing to the growth of United Colors of Benetton until it became one of the most recognised brands in the world. In 1990 he founded the magazine Colors (owned by Bennetton) together with the graphic designer Tibor Kalman. Under the slogan “a magazine about the rest of the world”, Colors exploited multi-culture, as well as Benetton’s publicity campaigns. The editorial line was independent to the clothes range. In 1993, Toscani created Fabrica, an investigation centre for the art in communication. As well as working for Benetton, Toscani has designed publicity campaigns for Esprit, Valentino, Chanel and Fiorucci. His work has won four Lion d’Or at the Cannes Festival. His work, not exempt of controversy on various occasions, include allusions to racism, war, religion and capital punishment.

Weta Digital and Avatar: The Future of the Cinema

BlogThis presentation will explore the ancient human need of storytelling, and how it has evolved over the centuries, advancing hand in hand with art and science with particular focus on movies and digital processes. Visual effects are nowadays a fundamental part of the movie making process and many of the digital techniques originated for this purpose have (and still are) radically transforming the ways in which movies (and the stories around them) are built, told and experienced. Avatar is a very important milestone in that path and this talk will explore examples from it to better understand the significance of technologies to the storytelling process. While fascinating and sometimes obscure, this field relies heavily on techniques and methods very familiar to most science students and researchers, and will try to shine some light on the process of turning science into dreams. Sebastian Sylwan is currently Head of Research and Development at Weta Digital. In this role, he is helping to bring structure and continued impetus to Weta Digital's long tradition of Innovation in VFX. Before joining Weta, Sebastian served as Autodesk's Senior Film Industry Manager. In this role he helped set the strategy for Autodesk's products in the global film market, including the first steps into stereoscopic 3D.
