The Future is Written in Coded Lines

The standard 729 of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) defines software as “the joining of computation programmes, rules, documentation and associated data that make up part of the operations of a computation system”. If we wanted to find a more literary way of saying it, it would be that it is the brain and the soul of the machines. Or, even, leaving definitions to one side, confirm that it is one of the biggest and most competitive markets of the moment; and, as such, one which needs bigger doses of innovation and collective intelligence.

In Campus Party Europe we are going to demonstrate that those two qualities are abundant in the EU. And we are going to do it by bringing together the most talented young people who, for a few days, will share knowledge and will explore more interesting themes such as software development and it applications. Very different projects such as increased reality, software applications for laboratory investigations, innovative developments destined for communications or digital entertainment products will be created, presented and analysed.

Coordinated by Cai Melakoski (Finland), Pau García Mila (EyeOs, Spain), Jordi Collell (Spain)  and Barbara Lippe (Austria).

Innovation and Cloud Computing

microsoft

Cloud computing and its future is one of the most fascinating research projects currently; Microsoft Research and its different partners explore new ways of working with this evolving ecosystem. This concept offers to the user an increasing and richer interaction, fed by the growing amount of information available on the web, social networks, and any other files with public or private information. The conference is headed by Enrique Fernandez-Laguilhoat, Director of Development Platform for Microsoft Ibérica.

PHP Performance Workshop with Rasmus Lerdorf

Rasmus Lerdorf

Rasmus Lerdorf was born in Greenland and grew up in Denmark and Canada.  He is a systems design engineer by the University of Waterloo.  The Lerdorf became known world wide when he became the first creator of PHP language.  What originated as a tool to obtain statistics about who accessed his personal web page, ended up being, thanks to the contributions from the Open Source community, an essential language for the Internet.  Lerdorf has contributed as well, to numerous open code projects over the last few years and has worked as an engineer for Yahoo.

There has been a lot of interest in PHP performance lately spurred by Facebook's HipHop PHP announcement in February.  Most people don't know how fast their site is and will make uninformed architecture decisions
or spend time optimizing the wrong things based mostly on myths and innuendo.  This talk will try to get you started down the path of a systematic approach to benchmarking, profiling and optimizing your entire web site.

Karlheinz Brandenburg, The Creator of MP3 Format

Brandenburg

Youtube Professor in Ilmenau and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology IDMT. He is known for his major contributions to the development of MP3, the compression algorithm that has changed the history of music. Although he applied for the first patent in 1986 it wasn’t until 1995 that Brandenburg and his colleagues first used the extension .mp3 for computer files containing music in the format MPEG-Audio Layer-3.  The MP3 format became the standard used for high quality audio streaming and audio compression..Using this method, the final size of the file could end up occupying 12 or even 15 times less than the original uncompressed file. It was the first compression format for audio files made popular thanks to the Internet. It is still the standard for the exchange of music files.

The Development of the Internet in Europe at Stake

Latif Ladi

Youtube The IPs are the numbers that identify each machine or component that is connected to the Internet.  The existing protocol for data networks that is used today is IPv4.  It has 4.294.967.296 web addresses but it does not cover future demand.  To avoid collapse because of lack of addresses, the IPv6 has been set up.  As well as expanding the number of addresses available on the Internet, it also has other improvements to do with privacy and security.  Latif Ladid (Luxemburg) President of the IPv6 Forum, a worldwide consortium of leading Internet suppliers, experts in the matter, members of the industry, investigation and education in networks, will be with us in Madrid to talk about this item of vital importance.

Going Beyond the Display

Surface Microsoft

Youtube Interactive surfaces allow us to manipulate digital content in new ways, beyond what is possible with the desktop computer. There are many compelling aspects to such systems – for example the interactions they afford have analogies to real world interactions, where we manipulate objects directly with our fingers and hands. Some systems play on these analogies further by associating tangible objects with the digital interface, again leveraging our skills from the real world to interact in the digital. By David Molyneaux and Otmar Hilliges (Microsoft Research).

Open Innovation

open innovation

Youtube Youtube  Cooperation, external networks, redefining the R & D ... All these concepts swing around the term "Open Innovation", a combination of internal and external knowledge, thanks largely to the Internet, are changing the rules and the way that companies, universities and research centers innovate. Thanks to the interactions between different channels, projects do not begin to take shape only within the company or complete the development in its own market. With the participation of Pau Garcia-Milà (entrepreneur and creator of eyeOS), José Vallés (Head of Open Telefonica) and Laura Merling (Vice President Developer Platform and Programs at Alcatel-Lucent), will discuss the advantages of applying this model in time, costs, generating ideas, and so on. The panel will be moderated by Kieran O'Hea (Manager at Marano Consultants and European Commission representative for the European Multimedia Forum and the European DVD Union).

Developing applications using Alcatel-Lucent “Open API Service”.

API Lucent

Nowadays Internet applications has the vocation of world-wide, and the number of mobile operators, APIs, and relationships to set in order to reach all subscribers belonging to any operator is a handicap to be faced by application developers. “Open Api Service” allows develop an application and reach all mobile operators from a single point of contact. Pursuit to monetize developments and offer APIs based on the standard “OneApi” initiative of GSMA. Some APIs, developments and examples of applications will be demonstrated and explained step by step.
